Thank you for your interest in taking pictures with me! Here’s some info about what you can expect from the session, my process, things to get us started. If you have questions about anything in here, reach out.

Covid Safety
I am fully vaccinated and boosted, and will only work with subjects who are also fully vaccinated. As of March 2022, I will require you to be boosted as well. In our session, I wear a mask and maintain distance at your comfort level. I can shoot up to three subjects at a time, provided you share a household.

Consultation

I like to get a good idea of your goals for the images right off the bat.
In your inital email, please include as much information as possible about how you'd like to be photographed, and any ideas you may already have. Inspiration and references are always helpful. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out, either. It’s alright if you want to let me guide the creative a little more and keep it as simple as possible on your end.

To  book your shoot session, you’ll pay a $100 CAD deposit. This is non-refundable, but transferable to another session if you ultimately have to cancel. Because of scheduling uncertainties with COVID, I’m alright with postponing a booked shoot if necessary, and I’ll contact you ahead of our booking if something changes, and I have any concerns about safety.

What will we be doing during the shoot, and how long does it take?

Please bring anything you want to use to our session, as discussed during consultation: wardrobe, props, items  for double exposures if applicable. It’s very okay if you’re not sure what to do in front of a camera, I’m there to direct you!

A session with just one backdrop and/or lighting setup and no more than one look (wardrobe and makeup, if applicable) will take an hour, sometimes less. Multiple setups and wardrobe changes will take over an hour, sometimes around two hours.

About multiple exposures and instant film
When I shoot for double exposures, I will take light tests for each setup. Because of this, there will be a bit of down time for you between setups and shots, while I make sure things are looking good.

The double exposure process isn’t a requirement, but it‘s how many of my portraits are made. When I shoot doubles, I use dark areas in one shot to create a ‘window’ through which the clearest parts of the other image will peek through. Textiles and bold patterning, or live plants on a dark background, are some ways I like to achieve this.

The results
After our session, I scan the photos at the largest resolution possible. Scans show a bit of grain, which is part of the aesthetic of the final product. Scanning often reveals subtle tonal dimension and clarity that isn’t as visible to our naked eyes in the original photo, however I will adjust lighting and colour if absolutely necessary.

Occasionally I add colour to black-and-white photo scans. If that look interests you, let me know!

I treat the original physical instant photographs as negatives, so they are not given to you after our session. You will receive the high-resolution final images, and I can include physical prints for added cost (variable depending on desired print size).
